is the term used for a Puglia farmstead.
These can be small, but often these are
large agricultural holdings, with
accommodation for the farmer, for the
farm labourers (frequently in trulli),
and cattle sheds, stables etc for the
animals. Even chapels were sometimes
built for the family and the small
community. Nowadays, old
masserias are in demand for development,
modern uses such as agritourism and other
holiday development.
