Masseria Cristina

The Puglian Masseria is a term covering large or small farm-based properties, from the large manor house to more humble farmsteads. The model is of a complex with a main house for the owner's family, often with heavily built and fortified stone walls, with other trulli dwellings often used for farm workers' accommodation, and further trulli outbuildings for use as stalla (for animals), for storage or as cantina (wine cellar).

Our property fits this model, albeit at the fairly humble level! The heavy stonework and trullo construction means a lot of protection from the summer heat. Cool in summer and keeping out the cold in winter is the theory.

The main house has thick stone walls rising to some 15 feet, with a main entrance door and small windows to the sides. The walls hide the fact that there is a roof terrace, and from the terrace and behind rise 5 trullo cones, and a further barrel-roofed room stands on the roof.

Inside there is a large squarish entrance hall off with arching ceiling. This provides a lounge and dining room. The kitchen and the other rooms lead off this. The kitchen is a double cone trullo construction, with rounded arches framing the window and joining the trulli sections, and a large traditional open fireplace. Cooking is by gas. The kitchen and dining room are floored with traditional stone paving.

The master bedroom with double bed has a very high trullo ceiling creating an impressive space, and has a period tiled floor. The second bedroom is also a trullo, but of smaller height, and is furnished with two single beds. A further trullo contains the large bathroom, with shower and bath, bidet and wc, plus washing machine.

The middle part of the house, currently unused, is less grand and more compact in style, consisting of a group of four trulli. Inside the trullo character is emphasised by arches dividing the living areas. The accommodation provides two bedrooms, one with double bed and one with 2 singles, plus a living area and kitchen facilities. A wc and shower room has its separate water heating system.

At the end of the row are two unconverted spaces, currently used for storage. One consists of a double trullo, the other a large open stalla with barrel roof and exposed stonework.

To the front and side of the house is a stone-paved patio area, and furniture is provided for outside relaxation and dining. Beyond the patio the property has over a hectare of land with over 300 trees, about 130 olives and 180 mixed fruit and nut including cherry, almond, apricot, plum, pear and fig, and there is a small kitchen garden. The house is just off a quiet country road with very little traffic. Alberobello can be seen in the distance from the roof, over the surrounding fields and vineyards. The town is about 2 miles away and can be reached in five minutes by car, via either a quiet country road or the main Locorotondo to Alberobello road. To the east Locorotondo is 3 1/2 miles away, with a similar option of routes.

The house is ideally located for exploring this region of Puglia.
