History and Sights of Alberobello |

Modern
Alberobello, continued If driving into Alberobello from the Putignano direction, one of the first things you will notice above you as you enter the outskirts of the town, is the towering wall and classical Egyptian-columned entrance to the town's cemetery. The cemetary itself is enormous and its rows of funerary monuments are well-tended and moving tributes to the town's present and past people. Today's Alberobello is centred on the fine Corso Vittorio Emanuelle, which leads from the Basilica to the Piazza del Popolo, a large square which fills with people in the evenings and is often the summer venue for shows and events. A short walk downhill takes you to the Largo Martellotta. Once the bed of a river separating the Rione Monti from the Aia Piccola, this is now the main venue for the weekly market, as well as housing an everyday covered market. Alberobello has a number of good restaurants in or near the town centre. In summer there is a host of activities and events, from religious processions to international folk and jazz festivals and summer-long open-air cinema. |
