History and Sights of Noci |
|
![]() The origins of Noci may date back to around 565 AD, when tradition says there was a military citadel on the hill site of the present town. The addition of an abbey in 591 indicates a growing population, and over the next centuries the population grew further, due it is said to immigration from other areas harassed by the Saracens, and another influx came around 1100AD by refugees fleeing Mottola. Alternative research
ascribes the origin of Noci to the middle ages, but
whichever is correct the history of the town from then
onwards is documented and shows the acquisition of the
town by the Counts of Conversano and later the Kingom of
Naples. The old centre is an extremely attractive mix of winding streets and whitewashed houses.
Of the churches in the centro storico, that of Chiesa Madre is outstanding, with a stunning interior, with a fascinating15th century presbytery. Outside the town there is the interesting Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce, dating from the 15th century. |
