The two old quarters of the town -
Rione Monti and Rione Aia Piccola - with about
fifteen hundred trullo houses - attract many
visitors, mainly Italian, in the holiday season,
although this never seems to swamp the town with
tourists. And even the "modern" town
has many trulli, especially around the church,
including the beautiful Trullo
Sovrano,
and a stroll away from the boutiques of the Rione
Monti will show you most trullo houses are still
very much in use as family dwellings. The status of Alberobello
as the Capital of the Trulli area, and as a World
Heritage site, means a range of tourist
facilities are on offer including a good choice
of restaurants, and frequent evening events in
the summer festivals which last six weeks from
mid-July. Any evening is a good time for a walk
along the main streets to join the town's
pre-dinner passeggiata. But even until midnight
in summer you will find the streets full of
people chatting, eating, drinking or just
relaxing with their friends.
The market, on
Thursday mornings, is well worth a visit
especially for its range of locally-produced
vegetables and fruit.
The Bosco di Selva
is a pleasant woodland just south of Alberobello,
offering an interesting variety of flora and
fauna. A walk around the woods can take 1 to 2
hours - look out on the way for birds like
hoopoes and flycatchers, lizards, chameleons,
butterflies, praying mantis and other exotic
insects.
