If you have a serious interest in architecture, religious art and history, throughout the area you will find many other sites of attraction, for example prehistoric dolmens and tombs, medieval cave churches (best seen at Matera and around Mottola) , or Apulian manor house (masseria) architecture.

The Blue Guide to Southern Italy is a useful guide to the area's cultural and architectural highlights.

There are many opportunities to enjoy walking the landscape and the heathlands of the Murge. There are particularly interesting walks in the Gravina area, around Matera and Gravina. Highly recommended is the Laterza nature trail. Bird watchers should keep an eye open for the rare Egyptian Vultures which breed here. The Gravina area is notable for its population of Lesser Kestrels.

The Foresta di Mercadante has extensive woodland walks, filled with butterflies in summertime. The Lago di S Giulano near Matera has walks through woodland to the lakeside.

At the WWF Oases at Torre Guaceto, east of Ostuni, and La Cesine near Lecce there are some excellent walks exploring the area's mediterranean macchia, wetlands and dune shorelines, with their characteristic flora and fauna.
